Wicked by jackieocean Wicked by jackieocean
I tend to find myself drawing a lot of "pretty" faces, so I thought it would be fun to do something completely the opposite. And it was!

This is a photoshop painting with my tablet using my original pencil sketch as a base.

The original pencil sketch can be viewed here.
An early progress view of the coloring can be viewed here.

May of 2005.

EDIT: No people, this has nothing to do with the musical Wicked. Think more like the wicked witches from fairy tales, the dark, original versions of fairy tales.

ooh the eyes remind me so much of this national geographic photo.. you know the probably most famous portrait of theirs, the one of the bedouin girl.. the same fierceness though i daresay she wasnt as wicked :) love it

It was loosely inspired by the witch in Snow White - I actually did the initial pencil sketch on a plane leaving a Disney World trip. ;)

This looks like the epitome of Baba Yaga, who is the "wicked witch" in all Russian fairytales. She's not really always wicked though. A hermit, and a wise woman people come to for advice (but it's considered dangerous to go to her.) She travels not by broom, but by the means of a large mortar and pestle (sp?). She does have a broom though which is made of birch, and she sweeps away her tracks behind her. She lives in a log cabin that stands on chicken legs that dance. Also she's really old because she ages a year everytime somebody asks her a question, and the only thing to make her young is tea made out of blue roses. If anyone brings them to her, she grants them a wish...

Anyway, I'm sorry for all my babbling. I just thought your picture was interesting, and I decided to talk alot... Lol (Btw, if you couldn't tell, I'm russian, that's why I know all that stuff. =P)

Anyway, great job on the picture. It doesn't look digital at all. Looks like traditional painting. Very nice. =]

Baba Yaga's a pretty interesting character - I've read a few stories that she pops up in.

I've actually been having the same sentiments about wanting to draw something aside from beautiful people. I just haven't quite succeeded.

This is excellent. Your skill in photoshop is apparent. I really like how there is variety and layering in the skin of her face, even down to the spots. Even with he detail, this look s a lot like a traditional painting. Excellent work!

Thanks very much! I'm glad you like the skin on her face, I had a lot of fun with playing around with layers for it.

No, nothing to do with the musical. Just your typical wicked witch figure from fairy tales :)

Hm,this still puts me in mind of the broadway show...for all,it's a bit of a harsher depiction than they place on the actors on stage.

I think I really just don't like the way you do eyes. :giggle: I'm sorry. I like THESE eyes, not the color, but the shape, but the rest of your drawings have me...well. eyeing their eyes.

I like her hair in this. Very soft, very tangible. I can't imagine how much of a fight it was with the green skintone. I always have a pain trying to do green skin. It's always either too bright or too dull, etc.

Yet another amazing kick ASS piece by you. Don't ever stop! Tablet? What is the Tablet called? (brand name etc). I use Photoshop CS2 but I've been hearing alot about artists using this "Tablet" and I wish I knew what to look for!

It's an Intuos II Wacom tablet with a 9x12 drawing surface. Basically, it's a pressure sensitive tablet with a stylus - whatever you draw on the tablet shows up on the screen. It's much easier to mimic brush strokes and gives you more freedom and control than a mouse. Try [link], but if you're going to buy one make sure you shop around first because some places give better deals than others. I love my tablet, and will never in a million years go back to a mouse.

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it. :)

Oh wow! This is very well-drawn! I looked at the sketch and WIP, and this turned out quite nicely. Looks just dark enough; and all the definition is still there. :) I have this book, I plan on reading it this week

Rock on!

Thanks for the compliments on this picture! And actually, this has nothing to do with the book Wicked (well, except for the shared title). Awesome book though. If you like that you should also read the Cinderella one that he wrote - I think it's called something like "Tales of an Ugly Stepsister." I want to read his Snow White one called "Mirror Mirror."

Based on the book or not, it still makes for a breathtaking piece :)

Confessions Of An Ugly Stepsister, yes, I have that one as well and plan on reading it after I'm finished with this one. :D

Wow, beautiful! (Even if the face itself can't be described as "beautiful," your artwork certainly can. ;))
I love her cloak, and the wrinkles on her face.

Waow that's awesome! You so rule. The only thing I could think to change is the hair slightly... it's quite bright for quite a dark picture, unless you were going for a strong contrast, which you've achieved :) I love your talent!

Thank you! I did want the hair to provide some bit of a contrast, but it doesn't quite fit into the whole image yet I think. Maybe darkening the hair would work. I think I'll play around with it some more in photoshop.

I drew this and did most of the coloring before I'd seen Ep.3 - but I can see where'd you see the resemblence. What is it with bad guys in general having the glowy, bloodshot eyes and the dark hoods? Is it part of the universal evil doers dress code? Mayb it's in the official handbook... ;)
