Artist's Comments

Marilyn Monroe has to be the most legendary actress ever. I remember even when I was a little kid, without ever having seen any of her movies, I knew who she was. I based this drawing of her on a photo that I found on The Internet Movie Database. This was drawn with pen and ink on Bristol Board and was completed in September of 2003.

Well, it really helps to have a black and white image to look at when drawing. A color image only makes this more complex, though it is possible. Then, after sketching out the basic image, I step back and look at the image I'm using as reference while drawing. I squint my eyes and study the image, paying attention to which areas have high concentrations of dark and light. I'll do this many times as I work on the drawing. And then I pretty much just pencil out the lines of the shapes I'm planning on using, go over them in ink, erase the pencil lines, and then finally ink all the shapes in.

That's really the best way I can think of to describe it. Hope that helps!
