Artist's Comments

For the curious, here is what the plain lineart and ink wash for Charlie looked like before I started coloring it. This was done on watercolor paper, March of 2006.

The completed version can be seen here: [link]

How big do you usually work on paper?

The colour version is awesome, but for some reason I prefer the purity of the uncoulered, because it's exclusively traditional and the technique shines through.

It varies, depending on the picture. For Charlie I blocked out a 9"x12" area on a sheet of watercolor paper.

Thanks. I rather liked the un-colored version too, which is why I wanted to share it. Glad you enjoyed looking at it.

Although the color version is a wonderful piece of work with your very recognizable style, I really like this "unfinished" piece. It's very cool to see the underlying technique of something and it reveals more about the artist too. I definitely dig this :)

Thank you! It's nice to know that people like seeing both versions of these. My actual watercolor skills aren't all that strong, which is why I've been doing ink washes and then adding all color digitally. I might dig out my paints and experiment some more with watercolor at some point. :)

That's why I shared it. I've been getting more and more questions from people asking about how I work or for tutorials, so I thought I should start sharing some before and after images. :)
