Artist's Comments

If you've been following my work, then you'll know that besides having a thing for pirates, I'm also very influenced by fairy tales. And not just the Disney versions that the general public knows, but all of the older and varied versions as well. Beauty and the Beast happens to be a particular favorite, and I've read countless different versions. For a while now I've been wanting to try tackling illustrating my own version (to do my own book would be a dream come true). Some designs I've played around with can be seen in my main gallery of my scraps gallery here on DA.

This summer I had the chance to try and do at least one solid illustration. I didn't have a huge amount of free time due to a busy work schedule, but I managed to squeeze in bits and pieces here and there. After quite some time, this is what I came up with. I'm pretty happy with it. A colored version is currently in the works.

This was drawn on an 11"x14" surface on watercolor paper using ink pens and ink washes. Full view is strongly recommended!

The colored version of this can be viewed right here.

From August of 2006.

Prints are now available!

Have you read teh version that's just called Beauty? (I wish I could remember the author's name.) I love the take on it, because it's treat's Beauty and her family like real people, and explain the hardship of financial ruin before she goes to the castle for quite a while. In this version, her real name is Honor, and she didn't like it as a little girl and said she'd rather be Beauty, so that became her nickname (her sisters was also named similarly, I think they were Hope and Faith).

This is a lovely illustration. The number of roses in it is astounding, and I always must applause people who have the patience that I do not. I fear it's my greatest shortcoming as an artisit. I like the Beast's design, and how he doesn't look too much like any one animal (which is what I love about Disney's Beast). Very nicely done! I look forward to the colored version.
